8 September 2004Richard "Dick" Hammond, 64, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at his home.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake with Keith Byers officiating.
Honorary pall-bearers were Tommy Hammond, Kassi Jo Sargent, Tony Hammond, Lacey LaScala, and Stephanie McCormick.
Pallbearers were Ed Garvin, Waide Sargent, Chad Mohr, Tim McCormick, Beaux Sargent and Scotty Hoaglund. Interment was in Wall Lake Cemetery under direction of Farber & Ottetnan Funeral Homes.
Dick was born October 25, 1939, in Woodbury County, Iowa, the son of William and Kathryn (McDermott) Hammond. He was baptized April 10, 1955, at Correctionville. He received his education in Woodbury County School.
He married Marcia "Marty" Sargent on October 13, 1958, at Sioux City, Iowa. Dick worked for Hallet Materials as a heavy equipment operator for 26 years, to which he was awarded many safety awards. After retiring, he worked for Bedrock Sand & Gravel until his untimely death.
Dick enjoyed attending auctions, old tractors, horses, hill climbing and spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He truly enjoyed life to the fullest. He was known as Dad or Grandpa to more than his own. He had a sense of humor, a loving heart, enjoyed a good joke, and had a contagious smile that anyone who met him will always remember.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard A. Hammond of Quimby, IA, Tracy Hammond and June Pfleeger of Cherokee, IA; and a daughter, Denise Freeman of Sac City; six grandchildren, Makala(Andy) Diercks and Trevor Freeman, Sara Peterson, Alex and Arika Hammond and Christopher Joines; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Kathryn Chinn of Wall Lake; two brothers, Norman and wife Patsy of Wall Lake and Thomas and wife Sherrie of Sac City; two sisters, Shirley Hoaglund of Lake View, and Bernice Roth and husband Don of Odebolt and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, William; two sisters, Geneva Foster and Janice Karsten; two half brothers, Delmar and Duane Hammond; and a half sister, Vivian Stratton
