SLOAN, Iowa — James L. Hendricks, 50, of Sloan died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at his residence of cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church in Sloan, with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be in Sloan City Cemetery with military rites conducted by Smith-Rhodes American Legion Post 295 of Sloan.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Rush Family Care Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hendricks was born Nov. 27, 1950, in Council Bluffs, the son of John and Doris (Harm) Hendricks. He graduated from Westwood High School in 1969, and attended Morningside College. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1975. He married Susanne Dahl on Oct. 8, 1977, in Salix, Iowa. He was employed with the United States Postal Service in Sioux City in 1975, and served as postmaster at Sloan from 1985 until 1999. He then worked for Ruan Trucking until his illness.

He was active in the community, including serving on the Sloan cemetery board and supporting Westwood athletics. He was the past commander of Smith-Phodes American Legion Post 295 of Sloan.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Paul and his wife, Sharon of Sioux Falls, and Pat of Sloan; a daughter, Amanda and her fiancé, Charles Parker; a granddaughter, Cailey; his mother; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Morris and Arloa Dahl of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Pallbearers will be Morey Copple, Jerry Combs, Jim McKenna, Roger Saxen, Don Lord and Lee Westergaard.
