26 December 2003Joseph S. Fischer, 86, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation will resume at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Mr. Fischer was born March 24, 1917, in Sioux City, the son of Frank and Rosalia (Burinda) Fischer. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Central High School.
He married Alva Louise Lee on April 1, 1934, in Elk Point, S.D. He grew up and had been involved in the landscape business all of his life. In 1938, he moved to California and worked for a landscape company. Then in 1944, he came back to Sioux City to work with his father in Sunset Nurseries and branched into Better Homes Nursery and Gardens in 1948. He had been active in the business until recently when he semi-retired due to ill health. Mrs. Fischer passed away June 11, 1992, in Sioux City.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Louise Barger of Sioux City and Maryann and her husband, Richard Krommenhoek of Sioux City; four sons and their wives, Gregory G. and Sharon Fischer of Sioux City, Roger A. and Patricia Fischer of Sioux City, Tim and Samantha Fischer of Rochester, Minn., and Mark and Betty Fischer of Sioux City; five sisters, Helen Sundermeyer of Sioux City, Rose Anderson of Sioux City, Marguerite Mahr of Fall Brook, Calif., Ethel Soelberg of Des Moines and Elizabeth Carlson of Midlothian, Texas; 25 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank Fischer; a sister, Mary Stanton; and a daughter-in-law, Betty Fischer.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
