Dr. Dean R. Prince, 38, of Califon, N.J., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, N.J. following a three year battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Lee Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.

Dr. Prince was born Dec. 10, 1965, in Sioux City. He graduated from West High School in 1984. He received his bachelor of science degree in 1988 from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He received his doctor of veterinary medicine in 1993.

He moved to Wilmington, Del. to practice veterinary medicine and later moved to Del Ray Beach, Fla., to work with race horses. In 1988, he moved to Edinburgh, Scotland to teach veterinary medicine at the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon being diagnosed with cancer, he moved to New Jersey, where he received an honorary Professor of the Year Award.

He was a member of the American Board of Veterinary Medicine, the Alumni Association of Iowa State University Department of Veterinary Medicine. He enjoyed his time working with race horses and carried that love into his work and personal life.

He is survived by his father, Dean Prince of Sioux City; his mother, Sally J. Prince of Sioux City; special friends, Lynn Halas, Olivia Schoenfeld, Andie Butler, Michell Hanna and Dr. Rick Schoenfeld and his family; two sisters, Lori and her husband, David Layhee of Dakota Dunes, S.D., and Tracy Valladolid and her special friend, Roger Peterson of Sioux City; six nieces and nephews, Tony, Nicole, Tyler and Sidney Valladolid and Lindsey and Kelsey Jeratowski; and a great-niece, Kenidi Valladolid.

Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of the United States Rural Area Vet Service, 125 Old Stage Road, Salinas, CA 93908
