13 April 2014SIOUX CITY | Roland H. Moore, 82, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at a local hospital, following a lengthy illness.
Private family services were held at Morningside Chapel, Christy Smith Funeral Homes. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Roland was born Jan. 9, 1932, at Soldier, Iowa, the son of Howard and Alice (Evenson) Moore. He lived most of his childhood in Mapleton, Iowa. Roland joined the U.S. Army on June 25, 1950, and served in Germany during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on June 26, 1953.
Roland married Beverly Davis on Sept. 25, 1954, at Onawa, Iowa. They made their home and raised their family in Sioux City.
During the years, Roland worked as an office machine repair man for Sioux City Stationary and Midwest Typewriter. He later worked as an optician at Walman Optical and Pech Optical, where he was affectionately known as "Rollie" until his retirement in 2010.
Roland loved the outdoors, and some of his interests that took him there included riding his mountain bike, bird watching, gardening, camping, family hikes and especially his evening walks with his beloved wife, Beverly. He enjoyed woodworking, rooting for his Hawkeyes and bowling as a member of numerous teams during the years.
Roland was known by others to be very caring, supportive and always ready to lend a helping hand. He made everyone laugh with his wry sense of humor, and sometimes all it took was a simple wiggle of his ears. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Moore of Sioux City; three sons, Brian (Vicki) Moore of Sioux City, Jeff Moore of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Michael Moore of Sioux City; a granddaughter, Angela Moore; two sisters, Roberta (Bob) Conyers of Mapleton, and Frances (Wendell) Hanson of West Des Moines, Iowa; two brothers, Jim (Judy) Moore of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jerry (Pat) Moore of Crete, Neb.; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Roger Moore.
