13 April 2014SIOUX CITY | Harlan E. Crouch, 76, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at his home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Abiding by Harlan's wishes, cremation will follow the service. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Harlan, the son of the Rev. Harlan Edward and Arina Chloe (Asbury), was born Aug. 16, 1937, in Freeport, Ill. He was the middle child of two sisters, Sylvia Kauffman and Bette (Greg) Mann of Des Moines, Iowa.
Harlan married Jane Grylls in 1958. He later married Kim Taff in 1986. He was a former Marine turned businessman and politician. Harlan studied at the University of Minnesota and landed his first job at Dun & Bradstreet in Chicago, Ill. He was later the mayor of Canton, Ill., before closing the door on politics and going into business, where he was most recently a partner turned president at Williams & Company Consulting in Sioux City.
If you met Harlan later in life, he would have tried to convince you he was a comedian or a professional golfer, the latter being more likely. There wasn't a course he didn't try to tame, going as far as Scotland to do so. And his sense of humor came into play both on and off the course.
Harlan also got joy out of giving back and created the Crouch Education Foundation in 1998. The scholarship gave financial aid for those who need assistance with college tuition and was a regular contributor to nonprofit organizations around Siouxland.
Survivors include his wife, Kim; sons, John (Mary) of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Van (Renee) Crouch of Canton, Ill.; daughters, Susan (Doug) Manock of Canton, Brandy (Matt) TenHulzen of Sergeant Bluff, and Jessica Taff of New York, N.Y.; grandchildren, Gabby, Olivia, Corie and Cody Manock of Canton, Breanna and Madison TenHulzen of Sergeant Bluff, and Alan vanMaastricht of Burton, S.C., and Melanie vanMaastricht of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Harlan's name may be directed to Care Initiatives Hospice or the June E. Nylen Cancer Center of Sioux City.
