SIOUX CITY | Ruby E. Martin, 94, of Sioux City passed away suddenly Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, surrounded by her family.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Visitation with family present will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church.

Ruby was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Geddes, S.D., to Eva (Montagne) and Ross Newman.

She married Howard Martin Sr. on March 7, 1942, in Lancaster, Mo. Ruby and Howard lived in Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska before taking up final residence in Sioux City in 1976.

Ruby was an active member of Morningside Lutheran Church, including the Esther Circle and quilting. Her life revolved around her faith, family and friends.

Ruby so believed in the gift of life that she enthusiastically donated her organs for scientific study and research to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Even as she passes from this earth to the welcome arms of her Lord, she continues to help others.

Survivors include her sister, Doris Miller of West Des Moines, Iowa; her three children, Howard (Ginger) Martin Jr. of Greenville, S.C., Susan (Patrick) Kenny of Omaha, and Scott (Gina) Martin of Omaha; grandchildren, Rebecca (Robert) Gray of Minden, Nev., Ross (Lisa Renee) Martin of Summerville, S.C., Regan Martin of Greenville, Kellie Schofield, Paul (Natalie) Kenny, Patrick Kenny and Douglas (Jennifer) Kenny, all of Omaha, and Erica Martin; granddaughter-in-law, Renae Martin; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Howard; sisters, Ethel Varilek and Faye Goebel; brother, Homer Newman; son, Charles Martin; and grandson, Rob "Robbie" Martin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in Ruby's name to an adult care center called The Friendship Program in Omaha, which is a private nonprofit agency whose mission is to create a caring and supportive environment to assist elderly and disabled individuals to remain independent in the community.

The family thanks the neurological and internal medicine teams at UNMC Omaha, Dr. Steven Joyce and his staff at Mercy Hospital Sioux City, and last but not least, her close friends and neighbors who enriched Ruby's life infinitely. She was proud to call you friends and to be a friend herself.
