Erik James Davis, 18, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital following a long and valiant two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Erik was born April 23, 1985, in Sioux City. He graduated with honors from East High School in Sioux City and was currently enrolled as a freshman at Morningside College, majoring in business.

He was raised in Sioux City and was a lifelong member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. He was an Eagle Scout with Troop 225 and a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. During his scouting career, he earned the Mile Swim Award, the Arrow of Light Award and the Leave No trace Camping Award. He had also earned the God and Church Award and was currently an assistant scoutmaster.

Fishing and camping were among his favorite pastimes. He had traveled the country with his scout troop on various High Adventures. These excursions ranged from the Black Hills to Canada, from Yellowstone to Northern Minnesota. He loved hiking in the outdoors, whitewater rafting and Canadian back water fishing. As long as it was an adventure, it was all right with Erik.

He also enjoyed a host of other activities. He was a member of the East High Marching Band, East High Concert Band and Honor Band. He had been a member of the East High football team his freshman and sophomore years. He achieved a Brown Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He played softball and football for various city leagues. He also was a true "gamer" and card player. He greatly enjoyed sharing these activities with friends and family.

Erik is survived by his father, Craig Davis of Sioux City; his mother, Nancy Davis of Sioux City; a sister, Kristine Davis of Sioux City; maternal grandmother, Emma Piper of Sioux City; paternal grandmother, Marilyn Davis of Sioux City; and aunts and uncles as well as godparents, Alexandra and Patrick Burks of Sioux City. He is also survived by aunts and uncles, Sue and Randy Richards and Pam and Brian Davis, all of Sioux City, Eric Davis of Denver, Colo., and Joel Davis and Carol Davis, both of Portland, Ore.; and many many other loving cousins and family members with a special note of tribute to cousin Tiffany Burks and her fiance, Justin Glasenapp.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, James R. Piper; and paternal grandfather, Dale E. Davis.

Pallbearers will be Eric Wirth, Erik Nelson, Brad Schultz, Kyle Ringgenberg, John Jacobsen, Justin Glasenapp, Brenton Watkins and Jake Timblin.

Erik Davis will be forever remembered by his family and friends as a man of courage, bravery, fortitude and dignity. His legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who shall always cherish his memory
