10 December 2003Elphege Michael "Al" Degrandmont, 91, of Galt, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Sacramento Hospital in Sacramento, Calif., following a brief illness.
Services were held Dec. 9 at St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Galt. The Rev. Jerry Ryle officiated. Burial was in Galt Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Ben Salas Funeral Home in Galt.
Mr. Degrandmont was born Jan. 7, 1912, in Vermillion, S.D. He had been a resident of the Sioux City and South Sioux City area for 50 years. He was employed as a time keeper at Swift and Co. He had been a resident of Galt for 28 years. He was employed as a truck driver for Rochas in Galt.
He was an adept violin player who learned by ear and played for various bands on weekends. He was the first U.S. citizen whose parents migrated to the United States from France through Canada.
He was a member of St. Christopher's Parish in Galt. He was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2492 in South Sioux City.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Veronica "Bonnie" Degrandmont of Galt; two sons, Marlin Degrandmont of Galt, and Allen Degrandmont of Orange County, Calif.; a sister, Aurella Dezonia of Helen Dale, Calif.; and a brother, Donald Degrandmont of Sparks, Nev. He was "Pepe" to six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dovic and Zilda Degrandmont; and a sister, Lillian Odom.
