Chester E. Kaiser, 78, of Yankton, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Avera Yankton Care Center.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Dan Doran of First Evangelical Free Church officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army National Guard. Visitation, with the family present, will be 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Kaiser was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Citronelle, Ala., the son of William and Emma (Caufield) Kaiser. He was raised and went to school in Wilcox, Ariz. He then entered the military service, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps with a B-17 bomber group, flying many missions in Europe during World War II.

He was married to Areline Lukhart on July 11, 1945, in Sioux City. After completing his military service, the couple lived in California one year prior to moving to Sioux City in 1947, where they had resided until August of this year when the couple moved to a nursing home in Yankton. He worked as a butcher at Swift & Co. for many years, retiring in 1975.

He was a former member of United Food & Commercial Workers Union. He enjoyed working with his hands and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Areline of Yankton; a daughter, Colleen Kowalke of Omaha, Neb.; a son, Bill and his wife, Geri Kaiser of Chamberlain, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Nicol Woody, Mike Kowalke, Ryan Kowalke, B.J. Kaiser, Jesse Kaiser, Eric Kaiser, David King, Deanna Scalzae and Brandy Turner; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Ronald Kaiser and Norman Kaiser; four brothers, Raymond, Kenneth, Paul and Leonard Kaiser; and four sisters, Alpha, Ethel, Agnes and Clara.
