SMITHLAND, Iowa -- Robert E. James Sr., 66, of Smithland died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be at a later date. The body has been cremated. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mr. James was born June 25, 1937, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of Earl and Matilda Ann (Carr) James. He married Kathleen J. Siglin on May 19, 1965, in Canton, S.D.

He began his career as a lineman in 1955, and rose to the position of journeyman lineman. he worked for several utility companies throughout the United States, retiring from the Inter-Mountain Rural Electric Association in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen J. James of Smithland; a son, Robert E. James Jr. and his son, Micheal Hunter James, of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Kathleen James, and her children, Meghan M., Michael B., Misty M., Matthew R.T. and Mycha Dwayne W. James, all of Smithland; and a sister, Elva Uhle of Onawa, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
