Bernice "Berni" Hinkhouse Boykin 1951 - 2011

Bernice "Berni" Hinkhouse Boykin, age 59, of Sioux City (formally of Aurora, CO), passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at her mother's house in Correctionville.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 22, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Salem Lutheran Church of Correctionville with the Rev Robert Chapman officiating. Burial was at the Dakota City Public Cemetery of Dakota City, NE, under the direction of Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home.

A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Correctionville.

Berni was born October 1, 1951 at the Schaller, Iowa hospital. She was the daughter of Rudy and Hertha (Rock) Hinkhouse. Berni was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville, Iowa. She graduated from Eastwood High School at Correctionville, Iowa in 1969. After graduation she worked for Postal Finance in Sioux City, Iowa for many years until she was transferred to Colorado in 1977.

She married Gary Boykin, Sr. on August 8, 1987 in Colorado. She worked for Firestone as an Executive Assistant for many years until she retired due to declining health.

Berni and Gary adopted Gary's three grandchildren and welcomed them into their home in Colorado. Berni enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with their grandchildren. Berni enjoyed bowling in several leagues where she also held many offices. Berni and Gary founded "The Gambler's League" in which they took many trips to Las Vegas. She also planned many events and parties for bowling leagues she was a part of. Berni also enjoyed being around family and playing card games. She was an avid Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies and Denver Nuggets fan.

Berni is survived by three grandchildren, Troy, Terah and Trey Boykin; one step-son, Gary Boykin, Jr.; Shelly Brewer; two sisters, Carol Welch of Akron, Iowa and her daughter, Lisa Welch, and Jane Prueher of Racine, Wisconsin; two brothers, Tim Hinkhouse of Bassett, Nebraska, and his children, Heather (Rick) Hill, Heath (Kim) Hinkhouse, and Holly Hinkhouse and Richard (Peggy) Hinkhouse of Cherokee, Iowa and their children Sam and Mikki; three brothers-in-law, Tom Bray of Lady Lake, Florida and his sons, Hannibal Bray and Aaron Bray, George (Michelle) Boykin of Sioux City, Iowa and Al (Marsha) Boykin of Sioux City, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Mary Helen (Mark) Fields of Libertyville, Illinois; her godmother and aunt, Norma Dallen of Federal Way, Washington; many other relatives and dear friends, including lifelong special friend LeeNette Wiese of Cushing, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Boykin; her parents; Rudy and Hertha Hinkhouse; an infant sister; one sister, Georga Bray; four brothers-in-law, Clayton Welch, Lee Prueher, Donald Boykin and Gene Boykin, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, George Boykin, Sr. and her mother-in-law, Louvenia Boykin.
