Clarence A. McCune, 92, of Correctionville, Iowa, passed away Friday, August 12, 2011, in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 15, 2:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, Correctionville, with Rev. Sheryl Ashley officiating. Denise Knaack served as organist with congregational singing. Pallbearers were Clarence's Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.
Interment was at West Fork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa with a military graveside service by Mumford Moon Post #79, and Sioux Valley V.F.W. Post #1750, both of Correctionville under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Service.
A prayer service was held Sunday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist church.Clarence Arthur McCune was born on September 19, 1918, to Arthur and Dessie (Dunnington) McCune in southeastern Ohio. He was one of three children. At age 14 he moved to rural Hornick, Iowa, and worked as a hired hand on the Clifford King farm. He lived with them year round.
In 1941 he enlisted in the Army. He served in the infantry for three years in WWII on the islands of Guadalcanal, North Solomon, and Philippines. His unit was involved in three major campaigns. In 2010, he was able to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, DC.
Clarence married Vera Burdick on August 11, 1945, at South Sioux City, Nebraska, shortly after returning from the war. She had three children, and they became the parents of a daughter and a son. The couple lived in Sioux City and Hornick, and in 1960 they moved to Correctionville where they owned a meat locker, shoe sales and repair shop, and upholstery shop over the next 32 years. Clarence also worked for 32 years for the Woodbury County Roads Department first in Hornick and then out of the Correctionville shed, the last 10 years as foreman.
Clarence loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed drinking coffee with the boys at Casey's and Cosmo's in Correctionville and peddling congregate meals to the "old people" in Correctionville. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Correctionville and of Mumford Moon Post #79 and Sioux Valley V.F.W. Post #1750 of Correctionville.
Survivors include son Jerry and wife Sue McCune of Salix, step son Larry and wife Argene Meyer of Correctionville, daughter-in-law Vicki Meyer of Correctionville, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vera; a daughter, Donna Jean McCune; a step son, Allen Meyer; a brother, Earl McCune; a sister, Irene Sands; and 3 great grandsons.
