Erma G. Grell, age 95, of Washta, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center of Correctionville. A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 10:30 AM at the St. John Lutheran Church of Cushing with the Rev Beverly Wolff officiating. Musicians were Sally Deeds & Marcia Schemmel and vocalists were Roger and Mary Dreezen.

Pallbearers were Troy Lewis, Tim Montoya, Aaron Lammers, Phil Reinking, Adam Reinking, and Jordan Reinking. Robert Mohr and John Anfinson were in charge of cars. Burial was at the Cushing Cemetery of Cushing. A visitation was held on Friday, April 22, 2011 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. The Nicklas D Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein was in charge of the arrangements.

Erma G. Grell was born on July 8, 1915 to August and Emma (Martin) Sorensen on a farm near Holstein, Iowa. Erma was baptized at the Holstein United Methodist Church on May 2, 1926. She was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing on July 1, 1934. She attended grade school at a country school and graduated from Holstein High School in 1933.

Erma was united in marriage to Ernest Grell on December 10, 1933 at St. John's Lutheran parsonage in Cushing. To this union a son and daughter were born. The couple farmed north of Cushing until 1940 when they moved to their farm near Washta. In 1958 they moved to their new home on the farm. They resided there until their deaths.

She was an active member of the Women of St. John and also did many quilts with the ladies for Lutheran World. Erma loved to work in her home, in her gardens and doing many crafts. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing and playing cards. Erma loved spending time with and doing things for her family. The family will always remember the fantastic Christmas Eves and her wonderful meals.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest in 1995; her parents; her siblings and spouses, Lillie Sorensen, Lila (Carl) Shiernbeck, Wilma (Harry) Clausen, Sadie (Magnus) Christiansen, Raymond (Leona) Sorensen, Esther (Clarence) Breyfogle, Harry Sorensen and Florence (Hugo) Schlinz, a baby sister, Opal Sorensen; and son-in-law, John A. Johnson.

Survivors include a son, Dale (Janice) Grell of Washta; a daughter, Sandra Johnson of Cushing; six grandchildren, Mitchell (Dorte) Grell of Germany, Peg (David) Reinking of Kingsley, IA, Lori (Mark) Lammers of Quincy, Il, Jeffrey Grell of Minneapolis, MN, Jaqueline (Tim) Montoya of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Teresa (Troy) Lewis of Cushing; great-grandchildren, Johannes, Mareika, Adam (Angie), Philip (Lindy), Jordan, Dhanashree, Aaron, Anna Liese, August, Ava, Alexis, Annika, Devon, NaTasha, Dylan, Austin and great-great-grandchild, Braden.
