CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa -- Darrell L. Pierce, 75, of Correctionville died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at his residence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa, with Chaplain Mike Inman officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military rites provided by the American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Darrell Lee Pierce was born Jan. 21, 1934, in rural Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Frank and Mabel (Wacheldorf) Pierce. He graduated from Anthon High School with the class of 1952. He served his country from 1955 to 1957 in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. After his honorable discharge, Darrell returned home and worked as a gravel truck driver for Mauer Construction Company at Sac City, Iowa.

On Aug. 29, 1959, he was united in marriage to JoAnn Bowers at Moville, Iowa. The family lived at Moville, Cherokee, Correctionville and Anthon, where he worked at various jobs. Returning to Correctionville, he worked for the Highway Commission for 16 years.

He was a fan of the Red Sox, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and Iowa State and enjoyed watching golf on TV. He also found pleasure in listening to country music and he and JoAnn were entertained by numerous country western singers at the Auditorium in Sioux City over the years.

Survivors include JoAnn, his wife of 50 years; two sons, Steven Pierce of Le Mars, Iowa, and Daniel Pierce and his wife, Brenda of Cherokee, Iowa; four grandchildren, Candice, Brittney, Dustin and Allison; one great-granddaughter, Hannah; three brothers and their wives, Wayne and LaQuita Pierce of Anthon, Iowa, Larry and Betty Pierce of Correctionville, Iowa, and Terry and Rhonda Pierce of Redmond, Ore.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Donna and Rick Crilly of Anthon; a brother-in-law and his wife, Gary and Jeanice Bowers of Decatur, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Melvin, Louis, Glen, and Roger; parents-in-law, Ernest and Lottie Bowers.
