6 December 2009SIOUX CITY -- Milton H. Brown, 77, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at First Presbyterian Church, 608 Nebraska St., with the Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Cherokee Cemetery at Cherokee, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be 10 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Milton H. Brown was born Sept. 7, 1932, in Renwick, Iowa, the son of Cecil Poulson and Rose Marie (Elmer) Brown. The family lived in Spirit Lake, Iowa, before moving to Omaha in 1942. He graduated from Omaha Technical High School in 1951, and worked as an apprentice machinist. After being drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1953, he completed basic training and leadership school while stationed at Camp Chaffee, Ark. In August 1953, he was assigned to duty with Co. A, 88th Infantry Battalion, Fire Direction Control, based in Korea near the 38th parallel. He was released to Reserve status with the rank of sergeant in December 1954.
On Aug. 12, 1953, Milton and Elaine L. (Brailey) Brown were married in Red Oak, Iowa, and they renewed their vows on Jan. 14, 1955, at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha. They had one son, Kenneth Alan.
Milton earned a B.A. in mechanical engineering from Iowa State University in 1959, and an M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota in 1984. He was a member of the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers. After graduation from Iowa State, he worked at Sundstrand Aviation in Rockford, Ill., Kable Printing Co. in Mt. Morris, Ill., and Weaver Division of Dura Corporation in Springfield, Ill. From 1974 to 1995, he worked at Sioux Tools (Snap-On) in Sioux City before retiring. Milton's interests included bowling, golf and racquetball. With his wife, Elaine, they enjoyed camping, cruising and traveling to 49 states and five continents. He was an active member of the Siouxland YMCA and Four Seasons Health Club. Over the years he had been a member of Masonic organizations and participated in the activities of the Shrine Wrecking Crew. He was a member of American Legion Post 697. He also enjoyed being a taste tester for Wells Blue Bunny for five years.
Following retirement, Milton frequently contributed to various causes and events around Siouxland. He spent many hours volunteering at the Sioux Gateway Airport. He was a sign carrier for the pro golf tournaments at Dakota Dunes. He volunteered for both the basketball and volleyball NCAA Division II tournaments in Sioux City. Most of his volunteer hours were spent over 12 years in the Tax Aide Program at the Center for Siouxland, preparing more than 6,000 federal and state returns for elderly and low-income clients. For his work, he was awarded the Governor's Volunteer Award in June 2009.
Milton was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his son, Kenneth and wife, Teresa, of Aurora, Ill., and their two children, Alexander and Christina; a sister, Dorothy and husband, John Pergande of Purdin, Mo.; two aunts; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brothers.
