DANBURY - Vera A. Petersen of Danbury died on Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 10 days.
Visitation, the rosary led by St. Mary's Rosary Society, and the vigil service were all held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury on Friday, January 9, 2009.
The Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, January 10, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. The Message in Music was provided by Vocalist Sandy Ortner and Accompanist and Vocalist Julie Hamann. Music was "On Eagles Wings," "Here I Am Lord," "Prayer Of St. Francis," "Ave Maria," and "There You'll Be" by Faith Hill.
Pallbearers were Jeff McBride, Todd McBride, Shane Dennehey, Jason Lefebvre, Brad Petersen, Zack Petersen, and Tyler Maynard.
Honorary Pallbearers were Tracey Maynard, Toni Scott, Tera Wilkins, Tami McBride, Sarah Dennehey, Jana Bubke, Jodi Jacoby, Jamie Lefebvre, Stephanie Petersen, and Jaci Petersen.
Burial was in Danbury Catholic Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home of Danbury and Mapleton.
Vera Ann Petersen was born on May 27, 1926 in Danbury, IA, the daughter of Peter and Theresa (Ortner) Wolterman. She grew up and received her education in the Danbury area. She graduated from Danbury Public School in 1944.
On September 23, 1946, she was united in marriage to Benny D. Petersen. They farmed north of Danbury until 1970 when they moved to Danbury where they later owned and operated Danbury Fertilizer. Benny died November 23, 1982.
Vera was a member of St. Mary'S Catholic Church and St. Mary's Rosary Society in Danbury, and she belonged to the Danbury Community Club. She loved to go golfing and was an active member of the Willow Vale Golf Course in Mapleton. She also bowled for many years in the Holstein area.
For many years, Vera kept a journal that reflected such things as the activities of her family, the weather, what she did, and many detailed thoughts regarding her day. These treasured journals have become a source of complete enjoyment for the family as well as a historical reference confirming memories they all share.
Survivors include two sons, Denny (Pat) Petersen of Danbury and Dewey (Janine) Petersen of Dunlap; four daughters, Dianne (Tom) McBride of Danbury, Darnell (Shawn) Dennehey of Danbury, Dawn Jacoby of Danbury, and Donna (Ken) LeFebvre of Mapleton; grandchildren, Tracey Maynard, Toni Scott, and Tera Wilkins, Jeff, Tami, and Todd McBride, Shane and Sarah Dennehey, Jana Bubke and Jodi Jacoby, Jamie and Jason LeFebvre and Brad, Stephanie, Zack and Jaci Petersen; 14 great grandchildren; three sisters, Kathleen Kinsella of Estherville, Ardis Baker of Quimby, and Kay Ehrhorn of Chicago; a brother, Peter M. (Lois) Wolterman of Danbury; two brothers-in-law, Don Uhl of Mapleton and Marvin Petersen of Anthon; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Wolterman of Mapleton and Enid Petersen of Anthon; along with numerous other relatives and many good friends.
Along with her husband, Benny, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Marcellus Wolterman; and three sisters, Ethel Kohler, Leota Schreiber, and Lois Uhl.
