SIOUX CITY -- Dorothy I. Hofling, 88, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at her residence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., with the Rev. Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Dorothy was born July 4, 1921, in Walthill, Neb., the daughter of Ezra and Nancy Heckathorn. She graduated from Emerson High School in Emerson, Neb. She graduated from a business college in Kansas City, Mo. She taught school in Ponca, Neb., for two years before moving to Sioux City in 1940.

She was married to Roman Thoma in 1944. She married James Hofling in 1968. James passed away on March 26, 1990.

She owned and operated a restaurant for several years. She later worked as the accountant for Ben Fish Tire. In the late 1960s, she and husband, Jim Hofling owned and operated Hofling Plumbing and Heating Company until their retirement in 1985. She lived in Sioux City until moving to Memphis in 1999 to join her son and his family.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church until she moved to Memphis. She then was a member of Living World Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a sister, Doris Harty; a son, Jeffrey and Laura Thoma; two granddaughters, Amber Thoma George and Allyson Thoma; a grandson, Jeremiah Beisner; four great-grandchildren, Neal and Emma George, Aliahna Eanes and Addyson Turner; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Hofling; a son, Bruce Thoma; brothers, Fred Heckathorn, Elton Heckathorn, William Heckathorn and Sherman Heckathorn; and sisters, Alma Van Houten, Frances Masters, Wilma Herrick and Norma Jean Blom.

Pallbearers will be Jeremiah Beisner, Cory George, Greg Hofling, Charles Jongling, Mike Salman and John Shattuck.
