SIOUX CITY -- Margaret M. Steffen, 76, of Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Nov. 21, 2009, at home surrounded by members of her family.

A private memorial service is planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Brooks Funeral Home in Clive, Iowa.

The daughter of John H. and Emma M. Cussen, Margaret was born Feb. 13, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa, where she lived the early years of her life. After attending Sioux City Cathedral High School, she worked for several years at the Sioux City Journal-Tribune.

She married Lowell Steffen on Feb. 7, 1959. After living briefly in Omaha, Neb., and again in Sioux City, Margaret and Lowell raised four sons in West Des Moines before moving to Shawnee Mission, Kan., in 1979. They returned to the Des Moines area, settling in Ankeny on their retirement in 1999. After moving to Shawnee Mission, she worked for several years for Mast Publishing Co. before her retirement.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Brian of Ankeny, Greg of Crystal Lake, Ill., Mike of Portland, Ore., and Tom of Olathe, Kan; a sister, Ramonde Zenor of Lawton, Iowa; five grandchildren, Andy and Alex Steffen of Ankeny, Bea and Jonas Steffen of Portland, Ore., and Mia Steffen of Crystal Lake, Ill..

She is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John; and sisters, Alma, Maureen and Clare.
