SIOUX CITY -- Ardis J. Schmitt, 72, of Sioux City died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., with the Rev. Tony Allard of Grace Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.

Ardis was born Oct. 29, 1937, in Le Mars, Iowa, to Fred and Bernice (Jurgensen) Grosenheider. Her early years were spent enjoying life on the family farm. She graduated from Le Mars High School in 1956. After graduation, she moved to Long Beach, Calif., where she met the love of her life, C.T. Schmitt. They were married on Dec. 19, 1959.

Early in their marriage, Ardis and C.T. settled in Sioux City, and made their home. From that time forward, she spent most of her time and energy taking care of her husband and three sons. Ardis enjoyed attending her sons' school and athletic events, and she was truly proud to see all three sons graduate from college. Ardis and her family enjoyed playing golf and bowling together. Later in life, Ardis enjoyed such pastimes as bingo, trips to the riverboat, completing jigsaw and crossword puzzles and playing cards and board games with her grandchildren.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sioux City. In the last few months of her life, she loved the time that family members spent with her. She also truly appreciated the staff and volunteers from Hospice of Siouxland for their dedication to making her last few months as comfortable as possible while helping her to maintain a high quality of life.

Ardis is survived by her three sons, Dan Schmitt and his wife, DeAnna of Homer, Neb., Tim Schmitt and his wife, Laura of Sioux City, and Greg Schmitt of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, Tiffany Schmitt, Jeremiah Schmitt and his wife, Abby, Kassandra Schmitt, Jonah Schmitt, Kaitlin Forsling, Taylor Forsling, Ashley Gnat, Dallas Schmitt, Truman Schmitt and Turner Schmitt; and two great-grandchildren, Adisyn Fehl and Cooper Schmitt. She also leaves behind her mother, Bernice Grosenheider of Le Mars; and two sisters and their husbands, Jan and Tom Guerber and Karen and Jerry Bertsch, all of Minneapolis, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, C.T.; her father, Fred; a brother, Kenny; and an infant son, Anthony.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
