SLOAN, Iowa -- Gerald D. Alfredson, 82, of Sloan passed away Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at the Embassy Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Evangelical Covenant Church in Sloan, with the Rev. Richard Moore officiating. Burial will be in Sloan Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Smith-Rhodes Post 295. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Masonic service, all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Gerald was born Aug. 13, 1927, in Sioux City, the son of Harold E. and Lillie (DuBois) Alfredson. He was raised in the Sloan area and graduated from Sloan High School. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. After his discharge, he continued his education at Morningside College and earned his bachelor of science degree.

Gerald and Marilyn Henry were united in marriage on March 9, 1952, in Sloan. He worked in the office at the Sioux City Stockyards for five years. He then joined Farmers Cereal Co-op, where he was manager for 24 years. After his retirement, he enjoyed farming.

He was an active member of Evangelical Covenant Church and served on many boards. He was a member of the Attica Lodge A.F. & A.M. in Sloan, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1998. He also was a member of the Sioux City Consistory, Sioux City Abu Bekr Shrine, the American Legion Smith-Rhodes Post 295 and a charter member of the Sloan Golf Course, where he served on the first board. He was active in the community and served on the town council and various boards. He enjoyed lodge work, old timers golfing, cards and coffee with the guys at the coffee shop. He and Marilyn also enjoyed traveling and visiting their family.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of Sloan; three sons, Dennis and his wife, Gayla of Enumclaw, Wash., James of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Richard of Lake Mary, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kari (Myles) Behrens, Michael, Megan, Trevor and Lauren Alfredson; two step-grandchildren, Tiffany (Mike) Aliment and James Castle; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Alfredson; two great-step-grandchildren, Emily and Jimmy Castle; a brother and his wife, Vernon and Audrey of Sloan; and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
