SIOUX CITY -- Alfred B. Cole Jr., 76, of Sioux City passed away peacefully at his home.

Military graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery at Sioux City, conducted by the U.S. Air Force. Abiding by family wishes, cremation has taken place. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Alfred was born Oct. 24, 1933, in Sioux City, to Alfred B. and Virginia (Doud) Cole. He was raised in Sioux City until the age of 11, when he moved to Omaha to attend Boys Town due to the death of his parents. Following his high school education, Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in April 1952.

He married Jean M. Kent on Dec. 8, 1956, in Dakota City, Neb. While in the Air Force, he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, serving more than 26 years total to his country, including serving in Vietnam, before retiring as a master sergeant. Alfred worked at Chicago Northwestern Railroad, where he retired in 1990 after giving 30 years of service.

He enjoyed tinkering with anything mechanical, electrical or even plumbing related, not always being able to reassemble into working condition. He collected clocks, enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Alfred looked forward mostly to joining the group at the McDonald's Restaurant on Lewis Boulevard for coffee several times a day.

Alfred is survived by his children, Larry Cole and his wife, Deb of Sioux City, Lance Cole and his wife, Jennifer of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Linda Mohrhauser and her husband, Corey of Belle Vista, Ark., Lori Fox and her husband, Randy of Council Bluffs, and Lucinda "Cindy" Zellers and her husband, Ron of Sioux City; sisters Pat, Joyce and Shirley; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and his dog, Benji.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean in 1999; four brothers; one sister; and two grandsons, Jonathon Webster Sr. and Cole Mohrhauser.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are asked to be made to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 54, 5129 Military Road, Sioux City, IA 51109.
