Fred Charles Coury, 81, of Alta, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, April 22, 2002 at a Sioux City, hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Christy Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Coury was born April 4, 1921, in Harrisburg, S.D., the son of Charles and Bertha (Owen) Coury. He moved to Sioux City as a child and attended Sioux City schools. He graduated from East High School in 1939 and attended Morningside College the following year. He served, in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946.

He married Marian Benna on May 19, 1962, in Sioux City. He lived in Sioux City most of his life. He was employed with Montgomery Wards in Sioux City and later with Rehan's Department Store and Rehan's Morningside Department Store.

He retired in 1985 and they moved to Alta.

He was a member of Morningside Country Club and Alta County Club. He was an avid golfer and bowler. He was a Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Survivors inchide his wife, Marian Coury of Alta; two sisters, Alma Coury and Lourice Rehan; both of Sioux City; a brother, Elias Coury of Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ernie Coury.
