James Vayne Cowell, 73, of Sioux City died Wednesday, April 24, 2002.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Rasmussen officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Cowell was born Dec. 28, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Carroll and Vera Louise Cowell. He attended Sioux City Public Schools. He was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He married Barbara Burdette in Dakota City.

Earlier in his life he worked sheet metal, in a packing house and in taverns. He was the owner/operator of Fishman's Bait Shop, which was his life. He worked all his life making friends and keeping them. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1950.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, James Cowell of Sioux City, Fred Tinker of Sioux City, Tim and his wife, Toni Tinker of South Sioux City, Chris Tinker of Westmont, Ill., and Jeff Tinker of Savannah, Mo.; two daughters, Susan Cowell and Terri Cowell, both of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, Dan and Aggie Cowell of Payson, Ariz., and Bill and Carol Beckner of Oakton, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He also raised 10 other children from previous marriages.

He was preceded in death by his parents
