Elmer M. Cowles, 79, of Winona, Minn., formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Third Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, with Pastor James Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Visitation will resume Thursday from 9 a.m. until service time at the church.

Mr. Cowles was born April 26, 1918, in Sioux City, the son of Howard F. and Emma (Wessel Cowles.

He married Millicent V. Overhue on Oct. 23, 1943, in Charter Oak, Iowa. She died Nov. 30, 1988.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He moved to Winona 23 years ago. He retired in 1973 as the foreman of Harvest States Cooperative Grain Elevator in Winona.

Survivors include two sons, Ron and his wife, Elaine, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jeff of Eagan, Minn.; a daughter, Beverly Cowles of Winona; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mabel Pitman.
