Services for John M. Cory, 77, Wisner, were Monday, April 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wisner. Pastor James P. Carretto officiated with burial in the Wisner Cemetery with Military Rites by Wisner Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5767.

Pallbearers were Dean Myrtue, Charles Myrtue, Carl Fuelberth, Steve Fuelberth, Jim Fuelberth and David Fuelberth.

John M. Cory was born Jan. 1, 1923, on a farm near Smithland, IA, to Ralph and Margaret (Yockey) Cory. He graduated from Smithland High School in 1940, and attended Wayne State Teacher's College at Wayne through his junior year. In July of 1943 he began the V12 Navy Officers' Program at Peru State Teacher's College, Peru. From there he reported to Norfolk, VA and Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. On May 10, 1944, he received his Ensign's Commission in the Navy in Chicago. On May 14, 1944, he married Elaine Fueiberth at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osmond. Their son John was born in 1948. Cory was sent overseas on May 21, 1944 for duty in the Pacific during WWII. He was discharged in January of 1946, having attained the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. He returned to college, graduating in May 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education from Wayne State College. In 1963 he earned a master's degree in school administration from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. With the exception of a year working for a construction company in Wayne, he was employed as a teacher or administrator in the school systems of Oto, IA; Pilger, Crofton, and Wisner. He also taught at Cuming County rural school District #17. His wife died in 1986. On June 6, 1987, me married Helen (Stober) Lukens in Crofton.

Cory was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served on the education board and taught Sunday School. He was a member of Wisner Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5767, the Nebraska State Education Association, and was instrumental in the starting of the Wisner Senior Citizens Center.

He died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA.

Surviving are his wife Helen of Wisner; brother and wife, Gordon and Dorothy Cory of Geyserville, CA; sister and husband, Maurine and Harry Myrtue of Smithland, IA; two step¬daughters and husbands, Cindy and Vince Jenness of Waterloo, IA and Celia and "Terry Freier of Delmont, SD; stepson and wife, Greg and Diane Lukens of Pierce; father-in-law, Benjamin Fuelberth of Osmond.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son and a sister.
