SIOUX CITY -- Mary Virginia Skorey, 79, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Lacey officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Mary was born Nov. 2, 1931 in Youngstown, Ohio, to Joseph and Ellen (Murphy) Curley. She attended Ursaline Catholic High School in Youngstown, where she still keeps up through the alumni. She was a 1952 graduate of St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, where she met her husband, Dr. George Skorey during his internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

She married Dr. George Skorey of Toronto, Canada, on June 27, 1953, in Youngstown. He preceded her in death in October 1995 in Avignon, France. The family moved to Sioux City in 1962. Dr. Skorey practiced radiology at St. Joseph's Hospital/Marian Health Center for 32 years while Virginia held positions in Sioux City Med Dames Auxiliary of the Woodbury County Medical Society, Mercy Medical Center Women's Auxiliary, Young Republicans, P.E.O. Chapter DH, Dollars and Sense Investment Club and Emerson Study Club.

Virginia was an avid reader of mysteries, thrillers, biographies and the Wall Street Journal. She had a great appreciation of music and possessed a beautiful alto singing voice. She enjoyed traveling the world over with her husband until his death in Avignon, France in 1995. She continued to travel with her children and close friends, Dr. Don and Carol Boyle.

Survivors include one son, Dr. Richard and his wife Javiera Skorey of Yankton, S.D.; two daughters, Karen Skorey of South Sioux City, and Patricia Skorey-Solberg and her husband Tom of Overland Park, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Lynnette Wiese; Kirsten Bush; Jorge Ricardo, Maria Javiera, and Juan Francisco Skorey; Jenelle and James Solberg; and three great-grandchildren, Aden and Ellie Bush and Bennett Patterson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one sister, Sara, who was stillborn.

Memorials may be made in her name to Sioux City Police Association.
