SIOUX CITY -- Raun J. Rasmussen, 83, of Glen Rock, N.J., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, of an aortic aneurysm.

Services were held in Ridgewood, N.J., under the direction of C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood.

Raun was born in Sioux City, the son of Clarence and Mamie Rasmussen of Shields Avenue. He and his wife, the former Donna Jean Reeves, attended East High School. He received a congressional appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in 1951. He received a commission in the U.S. Air Force and had several military assignments in Denver, Colo., London, England, Rome, N.Y., Boston and Toledo, Ohio.

He was a graduate of Harvard Business School. After leaving the service in 1962, he had a career of more than 40 years in the financial industry. He spent 10 years as an investment banker on Wall Street and became a partner in the corporate finance department of G.H. Walker and Co. In 1972, he left Wall Street and was one of the founding partners of three venture capital funds, which invested in early-stage high-technology companies for more than 30 years. During that time period he served as a member of the board of directors of 14 different portfolio companies. He retired at the end of 2003.

He served on the board of education in Glen Rock. He was an avid golfer and a member of Ridgewood Country Club for 40 years.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Donna Jean; four children, Raun Jr., Dan, Terri and Amy; six grandchildren; his sister, Janice (Tom) Clark of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and their children, Catherine (Pat) Kelly, Linda, Diane (Dan) Tjaden, Karen and Jonathan; and his niece, Sue Sullivan Miller of Spirit Lake.

He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Richard J. Sullivan, and their son, Michael Sullivan.

Memorials may be directed to the U.S. Naval Academy or Glen Rock Public Library.

His wisdom, stories and love will be missed.
