SLOAN, Iowa -- Jack Brell, 91, Lakewood, Colo., formerly of Sloan, passed away Aug. 18, 2011, in Lakewood after a brief illness.

A memorial graveside service, with military honors, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service at Onawa.

Jack was born Feb. 22, 1920, the son of James and Margaret (McGivern) Brell. He attended Sloan schools.

Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941. While in the service, he married Mary Cater on Sept. 16, 1943, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was honorably discharged Oct. 31, 1945.

After his discharge, Jack started farming south of Sloan. After retiring from farming, the couple moved to Sioux City, where he worked at St. Joseph Hospital as a maintenance supervisor. Jack retired from the hospital in 1981 and moved to Phoenix, Ariz. He later returned to Iowa until 1994, when he and his daughter moved to Lakewood, Colo., where he resided until the time of his death.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Edward and Patricia Brell of South Sioux City, Neb.; a daughter, Marilyn McMillin of Lakewood, Colo.; three sisters, Ann Hassett of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Gert (Robert) Friis of Sloan and Mary (Roger) White of Liberty, Mo.; a brother, James Brell of Camdington, Mo.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Loved ones who preceded Jack include his mother; father; two sisters; and a stepmother.
