SIOUX CITY | Lillian Hadden of Sioux City, went home to be with the Lord and reunite with her family on Jan. 2, 2013, just two days short of her 108th birthday. She passed away peacefully at the Holy Spirit Retirement home in Sioux City.

There will be no service at this time but graveside services will be held in the spring in Holstein Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Lillian Hadden was born in Ward, S.D., on Jan. 4, 1905, to John and Annie (Kegemam) Petschow. She attended grade school in Ward. The family later moved to Estherville, Iowa, where she graduated in 1923.

She married Edward A. Hadden, and they lived in Sioux City and Rapid City, S.D. To this union, one daughter, Doreen, was born on April 10, 1926.

While they were living in Rapid City, Lillian worked at a cafe and got acquainted with Mr. Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who carved Mount Rushmore. He invited Lillian and her family to come one Sunday afternoon to see the beginning of George Washington. Mr. Hadden, Lillian and Doreen were able to walk above the carving of George Washington and look down at the ropes that held the sculptor as he worked.

In 1936, they moved to Cushing, Iowa. Lillian owned and operated The Hadden Cafe until 1947. She then met her companion of 57 years, Gloyd Nelson. They moved to Sioux City in the early 50s. She worked at Johnson Biscuit Company, Swift Packing Plant, was a desk clerk at the Mayfair Hotel and the Warrior Hotel in downtown Sioux City. She also managed several apartment buildings, the last being the Bellview Apartments on Grand Avenue. Lillian and Gloyd lived there until she was asked to retire at the age of 85, and they then moved to another house on Main.

Lillian liked to read, embroider, watch T.V., be with people and liked listening to all kinds of music and would sing songs. She was still embroidering on her 100th birthday. She and Gloyd came to reside at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home just days before her 100th birthday. After Gloyd passed away in 2005, she continued living there and celebrated seven more birthdays. She reached the age of 107 years and 363 days. The staff at Holy Spirit took very good care of her and made her life comfortable.

Lillian is survived by one granddaughter, Loreen Moneypenny of Michie, Tenn.; four great-grandchildren, Dawn Gehrts of Cherokee, Iowa, Charlotte Tibbitts of Conover, N.C., Clinton E. Watts of Readlyn, Iowa, and John Friedrichsen of Cherokee; seven great-great-grandchildren, Ashley, Adam, Melanie and Amber Gehrts, Dale and Travis Tibbitts and Mitchel Friederichsen; one grandson-in-law, Larry Dahleen of Keister, Minn.; a niece in Arizona; a nephew in California; and all her caretakers and friends at Holy Spirit Retirement Home who took such good care of her to make her days happy for her.

Those who passed before her were her daughter and son-in-law, Loren and Doreen Friederichsen; two grandchildren, Louise Dahleen and Lynn Friedrichsen; one great-great-grandchild, Tatum Jean Tibbitts; one sister and brother-in-law; and her companion of 57 years, Gloyd Nelson.

She lived a long and fulfilling life, and she will be missed.
