SIOUX CITY | Frances C. Berger, 89, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 4 p.m., the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Frances was born on Dec. 3, 1923, in Alvord, Iowa, the daughter of James and Ella (Munns) O’Connor. She grew up in Rock Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Rock Rapids High School. Frances went on to graduate from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minn. She taught school one year in Jackson, Minn., before moving to Eugene, Ore., where she met her future husband, Joseph J. Berger.

They were married on June 29, 1946, in Eugene. He died on March 7, 2003, in Sioux City. After their marriage, Frances and Joseph came to Sioux City, where she was a homemaker raising 10 children. She later worked as a social worker for the Department of Human Services for 20 years.

Frances enjoyed cooking, sewing, dancing, and playing cards. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and attending their activities. She was proud of her heritage, being 100 percent Irish. She was a longtime member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church and the Confraternity. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America, Sew and Sew Club, Rosary Club, and OPUS. She volunteered at the Bargain Center for many years and also served on the board.

Survivors include her nine children, Bob Berger and his wife, Charlene of Sioux City, Julie Brown and her husband, Jim of Sioux City, Marilyn Berger of Lakewood, Colo., Louise Tadlock of Sioux City and her special friend, Dave Jaminet of Remsen, Iowa, Pat Berger and his wife, Bev of Fayetteville, Ark., Mary Jansen and her husband, Rory of Sioux City, Kathy Limke of McCook Lake, S.D., Joe Berger of Dubuque, Iowa, and Paul Berger of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; her sister, Mary Ellen Schreurs of Rock Rapids; 35 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; her son, Chuck; a grandson, Adam Limke; and a granddaughter, Erika Berger.
