SIOUX CITY | Lidiya Cherkas, 88, of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at a Sioux City hospital.

Private services will be at St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Lucas Rice officiating. Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery. Public visitation will be 6 p.m. Thursday, with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m., at St. Thomas Orthodox Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Lidiya was born July 1, 1924, in Minsk, Belarus; she was the daughter of Ivan and Sofia (Klochko) Ivashko. She grew up and lived most of her life in Belarus. She married Adam Cherkas in 1947 in Belarus. He died Nov. 29, 1989, in Belarus. Lidiya came to the United States in 1996.

Lidiya was a member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church in Sioux City. She sang in the choir in the Orthodox church in Minsk. Lidiya enjoyed knitting and canning but most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by three daughters, Liudmila Pauliushchyk and her husband Viktar of Sioux City, Tasha Voloshen and her husband Victor of Sioux City and Sofia Prohorenia of Minsk, Belarus; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Cherkas, and her son, Alexander Cherkas.
