SIOUX CITY -- Arlene (Bartels) Walding, 87, a longtime Sioux City nurse, passed away Dec. 24, 2011, at Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha.

The family is planning a spring memorial service in Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of John A. Gentleman Mortuary in Omaha.

Arlene was born April 2, 1924, in Dakota City, to George and Frieda (Wendte) Bartels. She graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1942 and from St. Luke's College of Nursing (formerly Lutheran School of Nursing) in 1945. She was a member of U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps from 1943 to 1945.

She married John M. (Jack) Walding in Sioux City on Oct. 24, 1947. Arlene was employed as a registered nurse in the polio department at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital during the polio epidemic in the late 1940s. She was a longtime employee of St. Luke's Medical Center in the department of nursing. In 1978, she received her bachelor's degree from Briar Cliff University. Arlene retired in 1986 as director of staff services for the Department of Nursing at St. Luke's Medical Center.

Arlene was a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Professional Nurses and was a member of St. Luke's Nursing Alumni Association. She was a past member of the American Nurses Association and the Iowa Nurses Association. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John "Jack"; son, Mike (Roxanne) Walding; grandchildren, Laura Walding, Michelle (Tom) Craig, Bridget Walding, all of Omaha; sister, Grace Kissinger of Mesa, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harry, Clarence, and Wayne; and sister, Frances Haafke.

Memorials to the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha or Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City.
