John Phillip Burgess, 82, of Sioux City died Monday, July 19, 1999, at Sterling House following a brief illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Laird R. Keever officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Burgess was born May 25, 1917, in Roy, Mont., the son of John and Clara (Gaines) Burgess. He attended Sioux City schools.

He was employed with various jobs for three years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1946, as an airplane mechanic. He was then employed with Sioux City Community School District as a custodian, then a carpenter and then as a supervisor of custodians from May 1946 until retiring in May 1982.

He enjoyed working at the schools.

Survivors include two nephews and their wives, John and Nancy Cummings of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Ron and Fran Cummings of Sioux Cit; a nieces, Rose Mary Brennan of Oak Harbor, Wash.; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Denise Burgess and Lola Cummings.
