Robert T. Chesher, 82, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at a Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Robert J. Schimmer officiating. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Chesher was born June 24, 1917, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of Erwin and Margaret (Sheridan) Chesher. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1941 to 1945. He served with Darby's Rangers in North Africa, Tunisia and Italy. His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart Medal.

He married Gladys L. Paulsen on Nov. 18, 1941, in Pipetone, Minn. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1945. He was employed as a brick layer for 25 years and was then employed with the Department of Labor and served part time as Deputy Commissioner of Labor. He retired in 1983. She died May 21, 1998, in Sioux City.

He was a member of Brick Layers Union Local 5, where he was a past president, Woodbury County Labor Council, where he was a past vice president, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Disabled American Veterans, Knights of Columbus, and the Rangirs Association, where he was a past president. He was a delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention in Miami and a friend of Bill W. for 20 years.

Survivors include five sons, Robert and his wife, Priscilla, Patrick and Jeffrey, all of Sioux City, Michael of Sergeant Bluff and his special friend, Lisa Grimsley of Sioux City and Thomas and his wife, Denise of Veradale, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grand-children; nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Vicki Banks of Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Don and Paul; and twe sisters, Ruth and Marjorie "Maggie" Busse.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons Sean, Michael, Jacob, Jack and Zach Chesher and Michael Cisne"
