Elmer E. Chartier, 79, of Sioux City died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Whitfield United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Floyd Post 1973. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

He was born June 20, 1919, near St. Joseph, Kan. He was the son of Walter and Beulah (Begnoche) Chartier.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, 29th Infantry Division. He was a heroic participant in the Normandy Invasion of Offlaha Beach, and was seriously injured there. For his service and heroism, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and other service medals.

He married Dollie M. Stout on June 22,1940, in Sioux City.

He had worked for several local florists and then at the stockyards for 40 years. He was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church. He was a member of Blue Lodge No. 615, American Legion Post No. 64, Disabled American Veterans, Green Valley Golf Course and the Stockyards Oldtimers. He coached little league baseball for Pepsi Cola from 1955 to 1969.

Survivors include his wife, Dollie; four sons and their wives, Everette E. and Mary K. Chartier of Framingham, Mass.; Allan W. and Lynda E. Chartier of Omaha; Larry G. and Judy D. Chartier of Carroll, Iowa; and Mark P. ahd Rhonda R. Charticr of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives; Harold H. and Lois Chartier of Sioux City and Alfred A. and Lois Chartier of South Sioux City; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Everette Douglas; two sisters, Wilma Gereau, and Stella Charticr Girard and one grandson, Shane Chartier.

Pallbearer are grandsons Todd, Darin, Evan, Chad, Gene, Sean and Chase Chartier.

A memorial has been established with Whitfield United Methodist Church.
