Vernon F. "Ike" Carter, 75, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at a Sioux City nursing and rehab center following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Alex T. Washington officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Carter was born May 7, 1926, in Wibaux, Mont., the son of Earl and Ethel (South) Carter. His early childhood was in Wibaux. After he moved to Sioux City he attended St. Boniface School, where he played on the basketball team. He also attended Trinity School. He married Dorothy B. Bueoy on Sept. 24, 1949, in Elk Point, S.D. She died Feb. 23, 2000, in Sioux City. He worked for Metz Baking for 25 years, Sioux Sweep Brake and also drove school bus for many years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was in the automatic weapons detachment and was trained in anti-aircraft artillery.

He was a former member of Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars,Sergeant Floyd Post 1973. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards and was also in a horseshoe league.

Survivors include two daughters, Shannon and her husband, Steven McAllister of Spencer, Iowa, and Kerry Kreuzer of El Paso, Texas; a son, Michael Carter of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Lee and Irene Carter of Albany, Calif.; a half brother, Bob Carter of Texas; a half sister and her husband, Marilyn and Bill Grice of Vernon, Texas; and two grandchildren, Jaime and Patrick Kreuzer.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Kelly.
