ANTHON, Iowa — Raymond A. Cassens, 69, of Anthon died Sunday, April 27, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, with the Rev. Susan Miller, chaplain of Hospice of Siouxland, officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery at Climbing Hill, Iowa. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Hindman-Steele Post 492 of Hornick, Iowa, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Little Sioux Valley Post 9124 of Oto, Iowa.

Mt. Cassens was born Feb. 21, 1928, in Ida County near Battle Creek, Iowa, the son of Ben and Anna (Kirkholm) Cassens. He was raised in the Ida County area and graduated from Bronson High School in Bronson, Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years.

He married Carole Gary on Dec. 31, 1952, in Climbing Hill.

Mr. Cassens farmed in the Anthon-Oto area and was a government meat inspector in Sioux City from 1974 until his retirement in 1989.

He was a member of the American Legion of Hornick and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Oto.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and canoeing.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Randy of Anthon; two daughters, Terri Cassens-Gill of Annandale, Va., and Lori and her husband, Clark Huipmel, of Lawton, Iowa; his mother of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Leonard and Juanita of Anthon; two sisters and their husbands, Margaret and Gene Sokolowski of Sioux City and Gloria and David Hink of Correctionville, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Marge Cassens of Sioux City and Florice Cassens of Anthon; and five grandchildren, Nicholas, Amanda, Carly Rae, Jacob, and Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Roland and Donald; and his stepfather, John Henry.

Memorials may be given in his name to Hospice of Siouxland.
