David W. "Mike" Caviness 1910-1998

David W. "Mike" Caviness, 88, of Sioux City died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Roger D. Graf officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Mr. Caviness was born Sept. 17, 1910, in Greenfield, Iowa, the son of James and Georgia (Salsberry) Caviness. He was raised in Greenfield and graduated from Greenfield High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Buena Vista College and received his graduated degree in education from Drake University. While attending Drake University, he was a former Drake Relays champion. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Ardith J. Wollenhaupt on June 1, 1947, in Greenfield. He taught school and coached athletics at Galva, Laurens, Greenfield and Clarinda, Iowa. He moved to Cherokee, Iowa in 1960, where he worked in school administration. He moved to Sioux City in the late 1960s, and was a guidance counselor at Central High School and North High School. He retired from North High School in 1976.

Following a brief retirement, he joined Akron-Westfield School District as a part time counselor for nine years.

He was a referee for the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) in football, basketball and track for over 25 years. He instructed in track schools around Iowa. He was a timer for the Sioux City Relays until 1997.

He was a member of Morningside Presbyterian Church and the track board for Iowa High School Athletic Association. He enjoyed golfing and high school sports.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Steven and his fiancee, Angela Giese, of Boulder, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

A memorial has been established in his name in care of the family.
