Elmer G. Carlson, 76, lifelong Sioux City resident, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, following a lengthy illness.

Services were held Friday, Nov. 1. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Mr. Carlson was born Nov. 6, 1925, the youngest of five children born to Gus and Julia Carlson. He was a confirmed member of Augustana Lutheran Church and attended Lowell Elementary School, North Junior High School and Central High School in Sioux City.

During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on a refueling "tug boat" in the South Pacific. After the war, he was employed with Chicago Northwestern Railroad for more than 30 years.

He married Margaret `Peggy" Swanson in 1949. They had a son, Scott (deceased) and a daughter, Dana. After 27 years of marriage, they divorced. In 1978, he married Arlene L. Osborne.

As a young man, he played baseball and was the catcher for several Sioux City ball teams. He was an ice skater, played hockey and enjoyed working on his Packard automobile. Other hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening and cooking.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; a daughter, Dana Dixon of Sioux City; a brother, Rudy Carlson of Sioux City; a sister, Alyce Rockwell of Irving, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carl Carlson; a sister, Jenny Lindberg; his first wife, Peggy; and their son, Scott.

Remembrances may be addressed to Augustana Lutheran Church or Westwood Nursing Home.
