Bernard Lee Carpenter, 72, of Chelsea, Okla., died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at his
residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick. Burial will be in
Rural Hill Cemetery in Whitehouse, N.J. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Kearns Funeral Home in Whitehouse.

Mr. Carpenter was born on July 31, 1925, in Sioux City, the son of Fountain and Helen (Undine) Carpenter.

He married Phyllis May Woodruff on July 3, 1948, in Sioux City. He was a former resident of Whitehouse Station before moving to Chelsea three years ago.

He was owner of Barney's Garage and Truck Center in Newark, N.J. for 25 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a avid golfer and water skier and loved traveling the country in his motor home. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Honolulu during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jeffrey Lee of Chelsea; a daughter, Gweneth Lynne Swensen of Branchburg, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lark Ellen Coklin in 1983.
