Wallace D. Chappelear, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Donahue Sarff of Morningside Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Chapelle Post 117 of Ponca, Neb. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Chappelear was born July 10, 1920, in Luck, Wis., the son of Walter and Myrtle (Nelson) Chappelear. He attended and graduated from Ponca High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He married Lera Hancock June 19, 1944, in Dillon, S.C. The couple moved to Sioux City from Vermillion, S.D., in 1966. His wife died July 4, 1989.

He was employed in the grocery industry and was a meat cutter until his retirement.

He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and American Legion Chapelle Post 117 of Ponca.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Bauman and her fiancee, Ron Roering, and Sherry and her husband, Doug Johnson, all of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Walter and Lenore of Tacoma, Wash.; four grandchildren, Marc Bauman, Stephannie Weidner, Cassie Lee and Dave Johnson; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ardith Chappelear of Ponca, and Dorothy Chappelear of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a special friend Fran Carnet of Ponca.

He also was preceded in death by an infant son and daughter, and two brothers, Marvin and Leslie.

Pallbearers will be Marc Bauman, Dave Johnson, Neil Weidner, Brandon Risetter, Warren Gregg and Bob Green.
