PIERSON, Iowa — Helen E. Irwin, 77, of Pierson died Saturday, May 24, 1997. at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Meadow Star United Methodist Church in rural Washta, Iowa, with the Rev. John Battern officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Pierson.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.

Mrs. Irwin was born May 8, 1920, in Hudson, S.D., the daughter of Alfred and Bertina (Engebretson) Ofstad. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1939, and attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City.

She was employed at Sioux Tools, formerly known as Albertsons, for 11 years as a secretary.

She married Harold Irwin on Feb. 23, 1953, in Sioux City. The couple lived on a farm near Pierson for many years. He died April 8, 1976.
She received the Parent of the Year Award from Morningside College in 1983.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Pierson. She enjoyed writing poetry and keeping a journal.

Survivors include three sons, Hugh and his wife, Bonnie, of Omaha, Matthew of Pierson and William of Vermillion, S.D.; two daughters and their husbands, Hallie and Brett McNaughton cf Kingsley and Eva and Manfred Rudinger of Sioux City; four grandchidlren, Katherine and Rachel Irwin and Ross and John McNaughton; a brother, Carl Ofstad of Hot Springs, S.D.; and two sisters, Bernice Nafe of Pierson and Joyce Rowse of Denver, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
