Robert C. Campbell Sr., 77, of Sioux City died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Morris officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Udell Coleman. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Mr. Campbell was born Dec. 6, 1921, in Sioux City, the son of Robert V. and Gem (Montange) Campbell. He attended Sioux City schools.

He married Shirley (Purcee) Newell on Dec. 20, 1963, in Sioux City. He had previously been married to Margaret Bridgett, who is deceased.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, during World War II. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1950, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. He served with the Civil Air Patrol from 1966 to 1968.

He was employed as a civil servant at the Sioux City Air Base for 18 years in shipping and receiving. He then was employed with Patterson Dental Supply for 13 years in shipping and receiving.

He was a member of Wesley United Metodist Church. He was a past Commander of American Legion Monahan Post 64 and a co-founder of American Legion Duane M. Nelson Post 1981. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed fishing and bowling.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, LaVonne Dahl of Onawa, Iowa; two stepsons, Robert Newell and his wife, Elida, of San Juan, Texas, and Donald Newell of Merrill, Iowa; three step-daughters and their husbands, Janet and Henry Groendyk and Donita and Duane Bratvold, all of Sioux City, and Connie and Alvin Gagnon of Merrill, Iowa; two sisters, Roseann Cutler and Cecelia and her husband, Seth Scott, all of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert C. Campbell Jr.; and a daughter, Terry Campbell.

Pallbearers will be Charles Campbell, Rodger Groendyk, Chad Newell, Norman Dahl, William, Allan, Brad and Cory Gagnon and Joe Newell.
