George "Chixen George" Caracter 1922-2001

George "Chixen George" Caracter, 79, of Sioux City died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Larkin Northside Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Rasmussen officiating. The body was donated to the University of South Dakota Medical School. Visitation with the family will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Caracter was born Feb. 16, 1922, in Upson County, Ga., the son of Jackson and Ida Bell (Chamblis) Caracter. He served ha the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1943.

He moved to Sioux City from the Minneapolis area in 1976. He was employed as a cook with the Hilton Inn, The Truck Stop in North Sioux City, IBP employee's kitchen, and retired from the Braunger Foods employee's lunchroom in 1991. He had raced greyhounds for more than 10 years.

He married Ruth (Martinsen) Beck on June 30, 1982, in Vermillion, S.D.

He was a member of the Catholic faith and enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ronald and his wife, Terry of Milwaukee, Wis., and Nathan of Madison; Wis.; a daughter, Brenda Hampton and hr friend, Mitch of Milwaukee; a stepdaughter, Vicki and her husband, James Walker of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.
