HOLSTEIN,Iowa-- Emma Elaine Hummel, 100, of Holstein died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, Iowa, with the Rev. Joelle Colville officiating. Burial will be in Cushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Barker Funeral Home in Holstein.
Mrs. Hummel was born March 19, 1899, in Holstein, the daughter of Joachim and Mary (Hansen) Sindt. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She married Dunk Hummel on Feb. 20, 1924. The couple lived near Cushing until 1935. They bought and operated the dairy in Cushing for four years. In 1939, they moved to Paullina, Iowa, where they owned and operated a restaurant. They returned to Cushing in 1943. He died in 1966. She entered Cushing Housing Apartments in June 1982.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed music, piano and cooking.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Jean and Glen Bauer of Alta, Iowa; three sons, Ray and his wife, Eleanor and Dale, all of Sacramento, Calif., and Don and his wife, Sherry of La Mesa, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by nine brothers and three sisters.
