CUSHING, Iowa — Virgil Vernon Volkert, 79, of Cushing died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing. Burial will be in Cushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Barker Funeral Home in Holstein, Iowa.

Mr. Volkert was born July 27, 1920, in Battle Township, Cushing, Iowa, the son of George and Luella (Reyman) Volkert. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended elementary schools in Cushing and graduated from Cushing Consolidated School in 1938. He then farmed with his father and brother.

He married Lavonne Hefner on June 5, 1945, in Cushing. The couple made their home on the family farm near Cushing. They sold the farm in 1960 and moved to another farm near Cushing. In 1961, they moved into Cushing and he was employed with the State Hospital in Cherokee for six years on the children's ward and as night supervisor. During the day he would work as a farm laborer and gravedigger. In 1967, he became an insurance representative with Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Co., which is now known as CUNA Mutual. He attended several insurance classes at Morningside College in Sioux City. He served as a insurance representative for 20 years, retiring in 1988.

He vas a meinber of St. John Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday School and confirmation classes. He was a member of the Brotherhood, where he was an officer, board of Parish Education, the church council, Sioux City Conference officer and Cushing Community and Busniess Clubs. The couple were also foster parents. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters and their husbands, Charlene and Jim Camenzind of Omaha, Marlys and Robert Neis of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Paula and Randy Dreeszen of Iowa City, Iowa; a son and his wife, James and Carol of Huron, S.D.; 10 grandchildren, Erica, Trina, Nick and MacKenzie Dreeszen, Sandra Smith, Christina Camenzind, Ryan and Saren Volkert and Sharon and Jeremy Neis; and a greatgrandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters and their husbands, Hattie and Roy Clappsaddle, Eunice and Raymond Christiansen, Irene and Russell Sears and Louise and Harold Foard; and two brothers, Roy and Allen.

Memorials in his name may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church, Senior Companion Program or Big Sioux Alzheimer's Association.
