18 January 1968Esther J Hjort was born April 30, 1892 at Castana, Iowa to Andrew and Anna Hjort and passed away at St Joseph's hospital in Sioux City January 10, 1968 after a brief illness. She moved to Smithland with her parents as a child where she resided until 1944 when they moved to Sioux City. They lived at Brainerd, Minn from 1940 to 1944. She was united in marriage to John Turman July 3, 1917 in Sioux City. Mr Turman passed away October 28, 1960 in Sioux City.
She is survived by 2 sons, Charles and John both of Sioux City and 4 daughters, Mrs Wesley Horn of Lawton, Mrs Wm Wingent of Bronson, Mrs George Foster of Kingsley and Mrs Joseph Rohmiller of Hinton and 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and one brother, Ed Hjort of Smithland and 4 sisters Mrs Vernon (Anna) Nolan from Sioux City, Mrs Laverne (Agnes) McVicker of Mapleton, Mrs Carl (Helena) Peterson of Hornick and Mrs Bill (Elsie) Carlson of Smithland and several neices and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Benkemier Funeral home in Riverside with Rev Arion Anderson of the Riverside Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in Smithland Cemetery. Pallbearers were all grandsons, Dwight, DuWayne, Loren and Larry Wingert, Cecil Horn and Gerry Sherwood.
