SMITHLAND, Iowa/ Joseph "Joe" Slota, 85, of Smithland died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in Mapleton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Marys Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa, with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery at Danbury, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7:30 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Visitation will resume. Monday at the church, one hour prior to services.

Mr. Slota was born April 18, 1914, at Allentown, Pa., the son of Micahel and Tacyanna (Macina) Slota. He moved with his parents to Danbury, Iowa, and farmed in the area until 1951.

He established an implement business, Slota Oliver Sales, in November of 1951. He operated this establishment uptil 1995.

He married Marjorie Moose on June 25, 1966, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa.

He, was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus (named honorary life member in 1988) and the Mapleton (Iowa) Club.

He entered Maple Heights Nursing Home in January of 1995.

Survivors include his wife; her three daughters and their husbands, Coella and Craig Nelsen of Newman Grove, Neb., Carol and Vince McDonald of Oto, Iowa, and Linda and Jim Kirkendall of Sloan,Iowa; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grand-children; two brothers and their wives: John and Gretchen of Anaheim, Calif., and Walter and Sylvesta of Washta, Iowa; three sisters: Pauline and her husband, Bob Bissey, of Charleston, S.C.; Ann Alesch of Marcus, Iowa, and Mary Slota of Dunsmuir, Calif.; a brother-in-law, George Sedora of Coplay, Pa.; and a sister-in-law, Irma Slota of Marcus.

He was preceded in death by twin brothers: George and Gerald; a sister, Julia Sedora; and a great-grandchild.
