Tom was born April 19, 1949, in Le Mars, Iowa, to John and Bonnie (Brodie) Hassebroek. He graduated from Sioux City Central High School and attended Western Iowa Tech Community College and the University of South Dakota.
One of his professional highlights was selling advertising for various sports teams around the area. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He resided at Prime Living on Pearl Street.
He liked to tell jokes and greet people by name. He enjoyed reading, and was an avid hockey, baseball and wrestling fan. He enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends, whether it was over the phone or a cup of Caribou Coffee. He especially treasured being a 33-year friend of Bill W., which led to many deep friendships. Tom enjoyed many jokes and friendships with the people he encountered in his daily life -- wait staff, health care professionals, and others. His life was enhanced in recent years by the P.A.C.E. program, and this brought him a greater sense of independence and stability.
Survivors include his father, John Hassebroek of Sioux City; a sister, Valerie (Jerry) Vagts of St. Paul, Minn.; two nieces, Rachel and Amalia (David Lester); two nephews, Thatcher (Kelly) and Paul (Indra Souvereyns); five great-nieces and great-nephews, Kaya, Pierson, Oran, Aidan and Finn; cousins; and a diverse circle of friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie in 2008.
In lieu of flowers, memoriams may be directed to the family to create a memorial for Tom. His family expresses their deep gratitude for all who worked with and supported Tom throughout his life.
